Global warming is defined by Wikipedia as "the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation."

Most think of global warming as being human-made, and while much recent attention to global warming is due to the human-made variety, global warming is actually a natural process as the Earth has experienced natural global warming and cooling many times in the past. The Antarctic EPICA ice core has existed for 800,000 years, and that has included eight glacial cycles with interglacial warming periods that are much hotter than current temperatures.

Some geologists believe that a rapid build-up of greenhouse gases caused the Earth to experience global warming in the early Jurassic period, with average temperatures rising by 5 C (9 F.) This caused rock weathering by 400%, which in turn, led to CO2 levels dropping back to normal over the next 150,000 years because rock weathering locks away carbon in calcite and dolomite.

Other past global warming events were believed to be caused by sudden releases of methane from clathrate compounds, including the Permian-Triassic extinction event and the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. However, the last glacial period was believed to be caused by natural variations in the Earth's orbit, which led to the retreat of the ice sheets because of the changing amount of solar radiation received at high latitude.

However, the recent attention to the topic of global warming is due to the fact that human actions have caused global warming on a scale and with a rapidity unseen before.

Global average air temperature near the Earth's surface has increased by 0.56-0.92 C (0.98-1.62 F) over the last century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that this observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in greenhouse gas concentrations due to such activities like burning coal and fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and overgrazing the land. These activities have increased the greenhouse effect, which in turn, has warmed the temperatures near the Earth's surface and lower atmosphere.

From the period of 1860-1900, global land and sea temperatures had increased by 0.75 C (1.40 F,) but from 1979 to the present day, land temperatures have increased about twice as fast as ocean temperatures (about 0.25 C/decade land temperature versus about 0.13 C/decade ocean temperature.) Also, temperatures in the lower troposphere have increased between 0.12-0.22 C (0.22-0.40 F) per decade since 1979.

The hypothesis of man-made global warming was first made in the 1880s, but due to the fact that 19th century calculations predicted that the mean global temperature should have risen by more than 1 C by 1940, and it hadn't, most had considered the hypothesis as more of a curiosity. It wasn't until 1979 when Mrs. Margaret Thatcher became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom that the hypothesis became a major international policy issue.

Global warming has continued to be a major international policy issue since 1979, as the Rio Summit in 1992 proposed actions to constrain the emissions and the Kyoto Summit in December 1997 established binding agreements that would commit nation states to the constraints.

Europe, Japan, and the United States have agreed in principle to adopt the "Berlin Mandate" that requires them to cut their CO2 emissions to 15% below their 1990 levels by 2010. The US is not totally convinced this is the right approach, however, as the US Department of Energy (DoE) has conducted a study that suggests the "Berlin Mandate" will not reduce world-wide emissions of CO2. In fact, the DoE study suggests that the "Berlin Mandate" could raise CO2 emissions because many energy intensive industries would be forced to leave the US, Europe, and Japan where the constraints are enforced to countries that have either not adopted the mandate or that don't strictly enforce them, and because those countries likely would have less energy efficient industries, that would likely raise the level of CO2 emissions.

Okay, so you've lived through the cold war, Ice Age, Y2K, Peak Oil, Bird Flu, International Terrorists, and you are worried now about what exactly? Oh yes, Global Warming and 2012, but of course, ha ha ha. Aren't you getting too old for all this mass media hysteria and nonsense already? I mean how many decades do you have to live through before you realize these are all merely created realities to make you fear, knock you off your game, or transfer wealth.

Not long ago, I was discussing all this with a conspiracy theorists, and he asked; "Have you studied the magnetic poles and the consequences of a flip?" OMG I told him, okay so, forget 2012, asteroids, and Global Warming; fear Earth's Magnetic Pole Flip! Okay fine. Well, here is the thing, I actually have read up on this so I told him;

Yes, I have looked at the available information, listened to the late night talk-show hosts, and read up on this somewhat. Seems to be a lot of theories out there, and yet, we've never observed this, and I've never seen any computer modeling, not that I'd ever trust human computer modeling with such an important thing.

If this is a cyclical occurrence, then it would indeed explain much of the human record, holes in evolutionary theory, explanation of 26,000 year old pyramids under the ground near the Ukraine and lots of ancient tales of past civilizations. But, I am a huge skeptic, and I'd like to observe another planet going through such gyrations before too much over speculation.

He then claimed that; "we are 1000+ years overdue for a polar flip, where the North and South magnetic poles reverse. When I was born magnetic North travelled almost a mile a year. It has been accelerating for 50+ years now and today travels over 30 miles a year."

Sure, and this could account for all the warming of the Northern ice caps, a couple of degrees in tilt, off cycle from what we consider the normal tilt in relation to the Sun could cause that. Throw in some urban heat, El Niño's, etc. and all the current events, ice melting, ambient atmospheric temps, altitudes of upper atmosphere separations is all accounted for.

He said, "But you don't understand we are all going to die, this is serious; polar reversals in the past gave hints of change and then BANG the flip occurred within months."

Okay, I suppose this is all possible, so I told him could be, as that is how nature often works, take a car going around a corner too fast, you hear the tires squeal but the car continues going around the corner, and at the tipping point, it breaks lose, you suspect it might, and have warnings, but never know exactly when.

Even if you can calculate the avalanche of a giant sand hill in the Sarah Desert, you do not know exactly when it will occur, just that you are on the edge. But in planetary tectonic plate terms, this could be not micro-seconds like the car, or hours or days like the sand hill, it could be decades, centuries, or more. Have you read up on the HARRP project and the original theories of using it to stabilize the planet, atmosphere, communicate, and control things? It's interesting. It sure makes a lot of sense to me.

He continued to attempt to scare me on all this stuff and claimed; "the reversals were preceded by magnetic poles accelerating, but the actual flipping is quick."

Okay, so I challenged his data and asked for specifics; How does one know this, what human had a compass and measurement last time it happened? Has it been simulated in the Lab? Well, anyway, I love the theory, and it would be more than cool for a movie like CORE, 2012, or future Sci Fi genre.

But he said; "when this happens it will result in solar wind pressure on the atmosphere and possible EMP (electromagnetic pulse) events over the entire planet which could conceivably induce electrical arcs over power lines and motor contacts."

Now then, may as well play with all this some more, after all, I am sitting in Starbucks and who knows where these people come from, so I said; Yes, it would in theory screw up everything in our modern civilizations, and it would take a bit of time even after the re-alignment and bring it all back. It could take 10-years with maximum productivity to re-stabilize civilization, and back to present day 20-years + educational backlog and bottlenecks.

It would kill off lots of people; weather would be insane, 600 plus miles per hour at the surface in some areas. Earthquakes would leave much of everything not standing. Rubble everywhere, well, in theory, or it could be a gradual non-event for those living in certain areas, and major disaster for others?

He reminded me of some recent history; "Remember reading about fires starting from telegraph lines in the 1880's when they had a big solar flare event?" And I have to admit; yes, that was a very interesting event, perhaps solar flares, cosmic weather, etc, hard to say for sure. He told me that; we won't care about global warming because we will be starving. Worms may be the best source of protein we could find in times like that, but if you are hungry enough they will taste great." Well, the human biosystem has a resilient stomach and genetically we can eat most of anything, except a few poisonous things.

And because of comments like this and religion we have so many flocking to see Hollywood Movies of Doom and Gloom! But if the Earth wobbles, gyrates, and then find equilibrium, or if such a process takes 30-days, it might not be so bad, but it would sure change things a lot, nothing would be exactly the same anymore. Cool topic, but consider this debunked, it isn't happening any time soon, and a little adversity builds character anyway!

The polar bears would have plenty of prey - penguins, seals, birds, etc. Of course the huge risk of introducing a new species to this environment is the destruction of other species. Whilst seals would be fine giving that polar bears haven't over hunted them up north penguins might be a different story - especially ones like the emporers that collect in huge groups to brood - a sitting 'duck' for a hungry polar bear. Perhaps a solution would be to tried them on some islands near the antarctic first and see how they went and whether other species could adapt to having a new predator.

Whatever the solution with the way the arctic is going time is running out for the polar bear (but not for property developers of nice warm arctic real estate!)

Soccer is now showcasing its twelfth World Cup event in my lifetime; this is the first one that I've watched. I confess that I'm no expert in soccer. However, as a lawyer with more years of experience than I'd care to remember, I am an expert on rules. I know bad rules when I see them, and soccer's got plenty of them.

I realize that I'm writing in futility since everything I've read about FIFA describes it as a lumbering bureaucracy that moves at the speed of erosion. Worse, reports are that FIFA is enjoying the controversy, happily viewing all of the talk about bad officiating through the prism of "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

FIFA's wrong. Soccer can't grow in such an environment. New fans won't put up with games being decided by referees. Also, soccer, unlike baseball, does not need publicity through controversy, scandal, and conflict. Soccer can keep its world-wide popularity on the merits of the game alone, that and the fact that soccer's so cheap to play. After all, to start a soccer game, all you need is a field, a ball, and a ridiculous set of rules.

I also understand that FIFA won't change the rules until Adidas, McDonald's, Budweiser, and Nike tell them to. But in the wake of the worst refereed major sporting event since Wrestlemania, perhaps it's time for discussion about new ways for soccer to be officiated. I have a growing appreciation for the game, particularly it's sudden action and speed, the latter being an element that still eludes American professional sport and its break-in-the-action pace.

Despite my growing appreciation for the game, however, the 2010 edition of the World Cup has lead me to the conclusion that soccer is a great sport but one not living up to its potential due to betrayal by its rules, officials and governing body. Watching FIFA and the referees smothering soccer's untapped potential is as frustrating as watching a jockey choke out a great thoroughbred.

As the kettle of game-altering bad calls gets added to with each round, followed by the inevitable shrug of the shoulders by FIFA, it's hard to know where to begin reform. My vote is to start on the field of play. And the best place to start there is to change the rules so that they ask less of the officials and return the games' outcomes to the athletes.

1. First and foremost, change the damn offside rule. The offside rule in soccer stands as the single most absurd rule to have ever appeared in organized sport. The problems with the rule are myriad. On a conceptual level, it is the only rule where one team can control a boundary on the field. Incredibly, the defending team's players can actually make an opponent offside by simply running forward when the pass is made. This defensive "play" fails to exhibit any athletic skill, ends real scoring chances that are precious in soccer, and looks foolish. Boundaries on a sports field should be fixed and immovable.

Practically speaking, the offside rule requires the referee's assistant to watch too many events at one time, events that are separated by distance and which occur in a split second. For a typical pass into the penalty area, which is where the most controversial blown calls occur, the official must see the passing player pass the ball and simultaneously see the location of the receiving player and compare that position (at the time of the pass) with the position of defending players. Since the offside boundary is constantly moving, the official often has to make this call while himself moving, a further complicating factor. If the official happens to be up field or down field from this moving line, his ability to accurately make the offside call is severely compromised.

Since there commonly exists distance between the passing and receiving players, it is physically impossible for an official to see both simultaneously. To call the play correctly then, the official would need independently operating eyes, a benefit not yet conferred on us by evolution. Thus, the existing offside rule can only be called reliably by lizards, horses, or Marty Feldman. Little wonder that replays consistently show the call on the field to be incorrect.

The solution? Borrow from hockey. Soccer should create a fixed line on the field. Draw a line ten yards out from the top of the penalty area. Once the ball is advanced over that line, the offsides rule would cease to apply. All passes would be legal. For passes started beyond the line, the offsides rule would still control. This rule would be much easier to call thus reducing critical blown calls. The rule would also increase the excitement of the game through more scoring chances, particularly on sets into the box from out wide.

2. Allow replay on goals. There is nothing more frustrating for a fan than watching a blown call on a score. In soccer, a blown call on a goal is game-changing. Such blown calls strain the patience of hard core fans and turn off new ones. FIFA's stubbornness and complete unreasonableness on this basic issue only exacerbates fan frustration and anger. People support athletics to be entertained by great athletes, not outraged by bad officiating. If you put on a sporting event and the fan comes away feeling cheated and angry, you've failed as a governing body and started the clock on your sports demise in prestige.

Technology has given the fan the ability to see the truth about a goal on the screen, whether it be television or smart phone, and the truth is a powerful force. FIFA refuses to employ such technology at great cost to the game. Fans won't repeatedly swallow a fiction about "keeping the game pure" as justification for not using such technology when the truth is playing out on a screen right in front of them.

FIFA needs to use goal line technology and allow coaches, like the NFL, to have replay challenges on goals. If FIFA won't pop for goal line cameras, at least stick a volunteer behind the net as a goal judge. The NHL has goal judges for all of its games. It is preposterous for FIFA, in soccer's equivalent of the Super Bowl, to rely upon officials standing twenty or thirty years away to have the final and only say on goals.

3. Allow free substitutions. Even the most ardent soccer fan must admit that play can get pretty ragged in the second half as the players tire. Nothing good accrues to the sport from having fans watch tiring players run around a field. To borrow from hockey again, allow the teams to freely substitute players in and out during the game, even allow changes on the fly. Such a rule would underscore the talent and athleticism of the players. Consider how much more exciting and fast-paced the game would be throughout if it were contested by rested athletes playing on fresh legs.

4. Stop the clock during injuries and goal celebrations. Why leave the amount of lost time during the game to the referee's discretion? Just stop the damn clock. Delays caused by goal celebrations and injuries prejudice the team that's behind. How many times have you watched your team be down and lose minute after minute of critical game time to the other team's players rolling around on the field with exaggerated injuries? There's no point to making the referee approximate stoppage time which is usually inadequate, just let him stop the clock.

5. Don't make a red-carded team play short-handed. Isn't an ejection and free kick punishment enough? Making the penalized team also play short-handed for the balance of the game is giving one foul too great an effect on the final score. The call becomes destiny for the penalized team. The rules should allow the penalized team to substitute in a new player.

This World Cup has been a watershed event. Soccer needs to grow from all of the bad calls stemming from all of the bad rules. One final suggestion in vain to FIFA, leave soccer's rule-making to the Americans. We're better at rules than the Europeans. We think about them a lot, change them often, debate them all the time. We built a pretty decent society on a good set of rules. You ask Europeans to think up rules and they come back with fascism, poll taxes, and the Stamp Act. We'll handle it. We defeated communism; we can defeat that other global menace, the offside rule.

Methane and carbon dioxide are some of the naturally occurring greenhouse gases. This is the manner in which the Earth keeps itself temperate enough for humans to live on it. The only concern with this is that humans are enhancing the process even further and it will result in Global Warming.

The sheer number of "green" options we can do is astounding. And, because it completely overwhelming (not to mention impossible) to try to do what makes sense to stop worrying about things that ultimately does not matter.

A few months after this test car, and due to the economic crisis at the time, Pierce Arrow had to stop production. It is very likely that the electrical interconnection between the engine and transmission has been made there. Pierce Arrow tools were purchased by Studebaker in South Bend. Not quite 30 years later, that company also vanished to form American Motors, along with Nash. Later, some of its fans attempted to resuscitate the Pierce Arrow. Unfortunately, were unsuccessful.

Thus, today the name of the company is in a mausoleum, along with others such as Horch, Maybach, Hispano-Suiza, Bugatti and Isotta Fraschini.

Plastic Takeout
I don’t know about you, but I always feel a little bit guilty each time I get takeout. It’s easy enough to choose a food and spend the cash, but convenient eating takes its toll on the environment. Several fast food outlets use plastic containers, at times separating each item to keep hot from cold. Unfortunately, these plastic containers cannot always be recycled due to the type of plastic used (#1 is the most commonly recycled). Also keep in mind that some plastics contain chemicals that can seep into your food. It’s a good idea to use your own reusable containers whenever possible.

Polystyrene Takeout
If you’re favourite takeout spots don’t use plastic, they likely use polystyrene foam (known to many as Styrofoam). While some cities across the country do recycle polystyrene foam, such as Toronto, many still do not, meaning that much of this will end up in landfills. Because of its chemical components (it starts with crude oil), the polystyrene will also not biodegrade making it particularly hazardous to the environment. It can also leech toxic chemicals into your food, such as benzene (a known human carcinogen) and styrene.

Microwave Popcorn
Trust me when I say that I enjoy a yummy bag of microwave popcorn as much as the next person, but it is sadly a huge packaging offender. Not only is there an outer cardboard box, but there’s also individually-wrapped bags, and then the paper used for the popcorn bags themselves. While the outer box can be easily recycled, the other components will likely end up in the trash. You should also be aware that some popcorn bags are reportedly coated with Teflon which can break down into a chemical that has been linked to cancer and birth defects in animals. Why not pop your own organic popcorn on the stove?

Pizza Boxes
Pizza is one of the most convenient and easy foods to eat – you just dial a pizza place, wait a short while and answer the door to accept your delicious pizza. However, there’s a much darker side to this tale: pizza boxes, if soiled, cannot be recycled. Although they are made from paper and many often include some post-consumer recycled fibres, the food residue from the pizza itself actually degrades the box and contaminates surrounding recycled materials. If your pizza box has a sheet of cardboard under the pizza that absorbs the grease, throw this into the organic food bin and recycle the intact cardboard of the box itself.

Pop Cases
Most of us probably don’t give a second thought to picking up a pack of pop at the grocery store but if you think about it in a bit more depth, pop cases are actually a huge waste of packaging. Everything you accomplish now will make spring that much sweeter.

Trees and shrubs
This month's tree and shrub tasks are all about planting, pruning and protecting.

If you live in a place that has mild winters, you can still plant trees of all kinds: fruit trees, shade trees and flowering trees; and choosing them is fun now, since nurseries tend to add their new selections in January.

On a day when temperatures are below freezing, plant new evergreens, rose bushes and deciduous shrubs.

While you shouldn't prune flowering trees until after they've bloomed, you can now prune most shrubs and deciduous shade trees.

When you notice new buds on deciduous trees, possibly late this month or in early February, give them their third and last shot of dormant spray -- follow the label's instructions and avoid spraying on days that are windy, rainy or below freezing.

Keep up with raking; fallen leaves can do heavy damage if left to smother grass.

If you have snowfall, knock snow off the branches of evergreens and fine-branched deciduous trees using an upward motion to keep limbs from breaking -- don't risk the benign fluffy stuff turning into ice overnight. If breakage does occur, prune broken branches.

Little live things
Wouldn't it be nice if birds ate slugs for a living? If you're a feeder of birds, don't stop now -- during this month they'll need all the help they can get, and it needn't be fancy. Birds will likely find any station above snow level, from old logs to carpet scraps.

Every slug you catch before it reproduces can spare you from facing several more generations. (And you thought rabbits were prolific.)

Maintenance
Take this chance to get sleek for spring. No, not to buff up for your getaway swimwear -- you know, the fun stuff. Machines. Tools.

Any machine repair you have done now will spare you spring headaches -- or at least a long wait in the queue that begins to form in February. Consider mowers, chain saws and other power tools.

Clean, sharpen and oil hand tools, from clippers to shovels.
Perennials
Even after the holidays, the catalog season continues.

Start planning your spring garden now by making a map of your garden, including what you'd like to plant where, with seed and bulb catalogs by your side for inspiration.

Clear away mulch from winter-blooming bulbs.

Dig up and divide winter-blooming bulbs after they've flowered.

In mild climates, you may still be able to plant hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and crocuses.

If an unexpected warm streak fools bulbs into thinking it's springtime, help protect them with an extra light layer of mulch.
Weeding
It's a nasty job, but unless your garden is buried under snow, somebody has to do it. Too bad weeds don't take winter vacations.

Many weeds are still merrily going through their flowering and seeding cycle even in January. Uproot them before seeds spread to spare yourself weeding future generations.

Winterizing
With winter in full force, there are several things you can do to protect challenged plants, trees, shrubs and even birds.

Don't haul that Christmas tree out to the curb just yet: Its branches can be used to protect tender plants and even root vegetables and perennials or to form a wind or sun shield for shrubs such as azaleas, rhododendrons, holly and boxwood. Or the full tree can be staked near a feeder to shield birds from cold. (Place far enough away to avoid accidents with cats.)

If you live in an area that has heavy winters and you haven't yet wrapped newly planted trees or thin-barked trees such as maple, ash, mountain ash and linden, do so now. Wrap from the base upward to repel moisture.

Keep protecting tender plants against freezes by covering them with burlap or other cloth supported by a perimeter of stakes; just don't let the cloth touch the leafy parts.

Houseplants
Winter houseplant care is more about attentive restraint than high maintenance.

When you water, which should be minimal during the winter, do it just enough so that water saturates the soil and comes through the drainage holes; at this time of year, plants left in standing water can suffer root damage.

Turn plants every two weeks for balanced foliage as they seek sunlight.

Check for pests in the greenhouse and on houseplants; treat with organic products so kids and pets aren't endangered.

Hold off on transplanting those plants whose roots are potbound.

On nights that are extremely cold, be sure to draw the curtains or blinds of plant windows.

Solar car finishes first round-the-world trip

POZNAN, Poland - The first solar-powered car to travel around the world ended its journey at the U.N. climate talks Thursday, arriving with the message that clean technologies are available now to stop global warming.

The small two-seater, hauling a trailer of solar cells and carrying chief U.N. climate official Yvo de Boer, glided up to a building in Poznan, Poland, where delegates from some 190 nations are working toward a new treaty to control climate change.

"This is the first time in history that a solar-powered car has traveled all the way around the world without using a single drop of petrol," said Louis Palmer, the 36-year-old Swiss schoolteacher and adventurer who made the trip.

"These new technologies are ready," he said. "It's ecological, it's economical, it is absolutely reliable. We can stop global warning."

Palmer's appearance at the conference marked the end of a 32,000-mile journey that began 17 months ago in Lucerne, Switzerland, and took him through 38 countries.

'Runs like a Swiss clock'
The car, which runs noiselessly, can travel up to 55 mph and covers 185 miles on a fully charged battery.

Palmer said he lost only two days to breakdowns during the journey.

"This car runs like a Swiss clock," he said.

He calls his vehicle, which was developed by scientists at Swiss universities, a "solar taxi" because he has given rides to about 1,000 people — officials and regular folk alike — to convince them of the technology's viability.

Passengers have included New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Delegates in Poznan are seeking an ambitious new climate treaty that would replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012 and has required that 37 countries slash emissions of heat-trapping gases by an average 5 percent from 1990 levels.

The goal is for the new treaty to be finalized at the next U.N. climate meeting in December 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"Here at the conference, we are talking about reducing emissions by 10 or 20 percent," Palmer said. "I want to show that we can reduce emissions by 100 percent — and that's what we need for the future."

Point source pollution refers to contaminants that enter a waterway through a discrete conveyance, such as a pipe or ditch. Examples of sources in this category include discharges from a sewage treatment plant or a factory, or a leaking underground storage tank. The U.S. Clean Water Act (CWA) defines point source for regulatory enforcement purposes.

Non-point source pollution
Non-point source (NPS) pollution refers to diffuse contamination that does not originate from a single discrete source. NPS pollution is often a cumulative effect of small amounts of contaminants gathered from a large area. Nutrient runoff in stormwater from "sheet flow" over an agricultural field, or metals and hydrocarbons from an area with highly impervious surfaces and vehicular traffic are sometimes cited as examples of NPS pollution.

The primary focus of legislation and efforts to curb water pollution for the past several decades was first aimed at point sources. As point sources have been effectively regulated, greater attention has been placed on NPS contributions, especially in rapidly urbanizing or developing areas.

Groundwater pollution
Interactions between groundwater and surface water are complex. Consequently, groundwater pollution, sometimes referred to as groundwater contamination, is not as easily classified as surface water pollution.[1] By its very nature, groundwater aquifers are susceptible to contamination from sources that may not directly affect surface water bodies, and the distinction of point vs. nonpoint source may be irrelevant. A spill of a chemical contaminant on soil, located away from a surface water body, may not necessarily create point source or non-point source pollution, but nonetheless may contaminate the aquifer below. Analysis of groundwater contamination may focus on soil characteristics and hydrology, as well as the nature of the contaminant itself.

Stop Using Plastic Now

For several months this fall and winter, a tall pine tree in my yard was plagued with a plastic grocery store bag that was tangled in its topmost branches. It was quite unsightly. But my 8 foot ladder wouldn't help me get it down and for those many weeks, the wind and rain didn't help either. I asked one the rogue yard squirrels to climb the tree and bring it down but it wouldn't comply. Finally, about two weeks ago, I noticed it was gone. Perhaps the wind finally worked its magic and the bag is off to 'decorate' someone else's tree.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who is bothered by the excess of plastic bags that take up space in landfills, and escape proper storage to clutter up the landscape. Consider this:

* There's an entire blog dedicated to eliminating the excessive use of plastic bags. Check it out!

* Plastic bags can an entangle and harm marine life and other animals. According to the World Wildlife Fund, "more than 100,000 whales, seals, turtles, and birds die every year as a result of plastic bags." The Australian government reports that "on 24 August 2000, a Bryde's whale died in Trinity Bay, 2 km from central Cairns. An autopsy found that the whale's stomach was tightly packed with plastic, including supermarket bags, food packages, bait bags, three large sheets of plastic, and fragments of garbage bags. There was no food in its stomach."

* San Francisco government is reviewing a proposed law that would levy a 17 cent tax on each grocery store plastic bag. Many countries including Malta, Papua New Guinea and other are taking similar measures. They're serious about getting rid of these bags!

* The small state of Rhode Island spends about one million dollars each year to pick up "these bags that blow all over the place from trash being delivered to the Central Landfill." Imagine how much larger states must spend. And if they don't, their landscapes must be a mess. It seems a shame to have to spend all that money just to pick up plastic bags.

* Plastic takes an extremely long time to degrade. We can burn it, but that pollutes the air. Getting rid of plastic is a no win situation. We need some plastics, but should monitor how much we use since it's so costly to dispose of.

"So what can I do?"

* Most everyone I know has a drawer or shelf full of plastic grocery store bags. If you are not using them, recycle them. Publix and Wal-Mart both have plastic bag recycling centers outside their stores. Please leave a comment if you know of other stores that offer plastic bag recycling.

* Ask the person who bags your groceries to use just one bag instead of two for lighter items. I always compliment the baggers that single bag my groceries, and some of them are beginning to know that I don't need "all those extra bags."

* Bring your own reusable cloth bags to the store to carry home your groceries. If you're like me, you have lots of cloth bags at home that mostly sit around unused.

Chana earthquake is a signal ...

CHENGDU, China (CNN) -- Rainy weather and poor logistics thwarted efforts by relief troops who walked for hours over rock, debris and mud on Tuesday in hopes of reaching the worst-hit area of an earthquake that killed nearly 10,000 in central China, state-run media reported.
Setting out from Maerkang in Sichuan Province at 8 p.m. Monday, the 100 or so troops had to travel 200 kilometers (124 miles) to go before reaching Wenchuan, the epicenter of the quake, also in the province, Xinhua reported. After seven hours, they still had 70 kilometers (43 miles) to go.
"I have seen many collapsed civilian houses, and the rocks dropped from mountains on the roadside are everywhere," the head of the unit, Li Zaiyuan, told Xinhua.
Added CNN Correspondent John Vause: "The roads here are terrible in the best of times ... right now they're down right atrocious. They've resorted to going in one man at a time on foot."
Nearly all the confirmed deaths were in Sichuan Province, but rescuers were hindered because roads linking it to the provincial capital, Chengdu, were damaged, Xinhua reported.
Local radio quoted disaster relief officials as saying a third of the buildings in Wenchuan collapsed from the quake and another third were seriously damaged.
The earthquake was powerful enough to be felt throughout most of China. Many children were buried under the rubble of their schools.
The Chinese government said the death toll was sure to rise.

The state-run Zhongxin news agency reported that a survivor who escaped Beichuan county in Sichuan Province described the province as having been "razed to the ground."

At least 50 bodies were pulled from the rubble by Monday night at Juyuan Middle School in Juyuan Township of Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, Xinhua reported.
"Some buried teenagers were struggling to free themselves from the ruins while others were calling for help. Eight excavators were working at the site. Devastated parents watched as five cranes worked at the site and an ambulance waited," Xinhua reported.
"A tearful mother said her son, ninth-grader Zhang Chengwei, was buried in the ruins."
Meanwhile, 2,300 people were buried in two collapsed chemical plants in Sichuan's Shifang city, and 80 tons of ammonia leaked out, Xinhua reported. Six hundred people died there. The plants were among a series of buildings that collapsed, including private homes, schools and factories.
The local government has evacuated 6,000 civilians from the area and was dispatching firefighters to help at the scene, Xinhua reported.

Sichuan Province sits in the Sichuan basin and is surrounded by the Himalayas to the west. The Yangtze River flows through the province and the Three Gorges Dam in the nearby Hubei Province controls flooding to the Sichuan -- though there were no reports of damage to the world's largest dam.
Monday's quake was caused by the Tibetan plateau colliding with the Sichuan basin, Zhigang Peng, an earthquake expert at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, told CNN.
"Earthquakes in this part of China are infrequent but not uncommon," he said.
The last major earthquake in the region occurred in the northwestern margin of the Sichuan basin when a 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 9,300 people on August 25, 1933.
President Hu Jintao ordered an all-out effort to help those affected, and Premier Wen Jiabao traveled to the region to direct the rescue work, Xinhua reported.
"My fellow Chinese, facing such a severe disaster, we need calm, confidence, courage and efficient organization," Wen was quoted as saying.
"I believe we can certainly overcome the disaster with the public and the military working together under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the government."
Peter Sammonds, professor of geophysics at University College London, called the earthquake "tremendous."
"Particularly in the more remote, the more mountainous part where this has taken place, a lot of the buildings are built on sediments that are quite unstable. They're probably liquifying, causing the buildings to collapse. You might expect landslides to occur, which could actually stop the relief efforts going through on the roads, so this could be very grim in the remoter, more mountainous parts of this province."
While many of the most immediate efforts were focused on Sichuan Province, Xinhua also reported dead and injured in Gansu, Chongqing and Yunnan provinces.
A provincial government spokesman said they feared more dead and injured in collapsed houses in Dujiangyan City in Wenchuan County.
A driver for the seismological bureau said he saw "rows of houses collapsed" in Dujiangyan, Xinhua reported.
Bonnie Thie, the country director of the Peace Corps, told CNN she was on a university campus in Chengdu about 60 miles from the epicenter, in the eastern part of China's Sichuan province, when the first quake hit.
"You could see the ground shaking," Thie told CNN.
The shaking "went on for what seemed like a very long time," she said.
Bruce Presgrave, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said this quake could cause major damage because of its strength and proximity to major population centers. Also, it was relatively shallow, and those kinds of quakes tend to do more damage near the epicenter than deeper ones, Presgrave said.
An earthquake with 7.5 magnitude in the northern Chinese city of Tangshan killed 255,000 people in 1976 -- the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the last four centuries and the second greatest in recorded history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Thousands of people were evacuated from Beijing buildings immediately after the earthquake.
At least seven more earthquakes -- measuring between 4.0 and 6.0 magnitudes -- happened nearby over the four hours after the initial quake at at 2:28 p.m. local time, the USGS reported.

Turn off lights.

Turn off other electric things, like TVs, stereos, and radios when not in use.

Use rechargable batteries.

Do things manually instead of electrically, like open cans by hand.

Use fans instead of air conditioners.

In winter, wear a sweater instead of turning up your thermostat.

Insulate your home so you won't be cold in winter.

Use less hot water.

Whenever possible, use a bus or subway, or ride your bike or walk.

Try to buy organic fruits and vegetables if you're concerned about pesticides. (Organic food is

grown without man-made fertilizers and/or pesticides).

Don't waste products made from forest materials.

Use recycled paper and/or recycle it. Reuse old papers.

Don't buy products that may have been made at the expense of the rainforest.

Support products that are harvested from the rainforest but have not cut down trees to get it.

Plant trees, espessially if you have cut one down.

Get other people to help you in your cause. Make and/or join an organization.

Avoid products that are used once, then thrown away.

Buy products with little or no packaging.

Encourage your grocery store sell environmentally friendly cloth bags for people to use when
they shop, or bring your own.

REDUCE, REUSE, & RECYCLE.

Compost.

Buy recycled products.

Don't buy pets taken from the wild.

If you have a good zoo nearby, (if the animals are healthy and the zoo takes care of them),
support it! Espessially if they help breed endangered animals.

Don't buy products if animals were killed to make it.

Cut up your six-pack rings before throwing them out.

The climate can change naturally but Man has in no doubt accelerated and interfered with this natural occurance as the IPCC stated in their Fourth Assessment Report released in 2007. The cynics have to open their eyes as we all know deep down inside that something is fundamentally wrong yet we continue to be swayed by the negative few trying to influence the many, leading to confusion. We are running out of time debating climate change and who's caused what. It is time to act now whether small changes are made by the individual or larger changes by organisations - changes must be made. But one thing is absolute - the rainforests must be saved - act now! This an excerpt from The Report by Ann Walker and White Arrow which was written in 1991 and sent to World Leaders in 1992. "Europe and EnglandPresently, the overwhelming influences on Europe’s climate are the Atlantic Ocean, the cold land-mass of Asia and the warm air mass over the ocean with its warm Gulf stream. The Gulf stream is so effective in elevating temperatures that, mountains apart, where the Atlantic and Saharan influences coincide in southern Spain, winter temperatures presently can be as high as Florida – ten degrees of latitude or 700 miles farther south. England will be an indication of the severity of upcoming changes that Europe will experience, during process. In the year 2012 there will be nationwide crop losses. The temperature, twenty years hence, in England will begin at 120F and constitute the start of the irreversible stage of temperature increase. Throughout England, at this time, there will be widespread flooding, together with a phenomenon of frequent large-scale fires that may be likened to the spontaneous fires which occur in Canada/North America after prolonged arid conditions."Fifteen years ago, Ann Walker and White Arrow warned us what we should expect if the rainforests were not saved. The year 2012 has changed due to continued deforestation and the shift in the Earth's axis, the process had been brought forward five years to 2007! We cannot be complacent. During June/July 2007, the UK has experienced severe thunderstorms and flooding which have hit all parts of England, Wales and Scotland. Homes have been flooded, transport networks have ground to a halt and crop losses have been reported. On 20th July, over one month's rain (100mm) fell in one day in Oxfordshire. The Met Office reports the severe storms that have lashed the UK have been caused by the jetstream that has moved to a lower latitude around the UK which had led to frequent low pressure areas, leaving us with lots of rain and storms - but no-one explains why these weather patterns have changed! Ann's report has been verified by United Nations as being correct in its predictions - we must do something NOW! It is up to us to push for change - our politicians are not interested or they would have acted to prevent catastrophes happening to the very people that elect them!
